Hapkidoka's little demo in the publicus gave me insipiration (whether this has been posted before I don't know). Has anyone on this forum actually attempted board breaking techniques while tricking?
Well, I thought it would be an interesting prospect. I would assume that most breaks would be limited to tricks of the kicking genre; tornado, 540, double leg, 720, b-kick, 900, flash kick, parafuso, etc. Just would think its cool to see some people do this.
I'll post something later today if I get the chance but if anyone else has something previous or new then go for it. Honestly, this has the potential to be something hardcore to see you guys do.

tricks arent designed to use for breaking dude, but im sure you're aware of that.
99% of the breaks you see with trick techniques are balsa wood with the thickness of a folded piece of paper
If only I could find that kyokushin guy who broke a baseball bat with a jump spin hook

Yes I am. However tricks aren't meant for fighting really either but it does take somewhat more concentration to break or hit anything specifically with a particular trick. Like kicking and apple off someones head or breaking a board or whatever. Just seems to me this would raise the level of badassery if people could think of some cool ways to do it.
Incidentally, I i use either 3/4 - 1 inch pine. I have some videos of me doing tornado kick on that stuff. So its not as hard as it sounds but you are right as far as most of the time when demonstrations are going on break a paper thin pieces of board is what they do.
By the way guys...don't go trying this on a thicker piece of wood if you don't think you have the conditioned limbs for it.
OH and doeni, that was pretty cool actually. when i first saw him standing next to the dummy I was like..oh...great. But then he actually pulled those moves quite nicely. Surprisingly good accuracy, lol. Loved the b-twist at the end ha ha!

love your avatar petebull...that movie was greatness. heh heh.
If you have a Lowe's hardware store nearby you can buy a plank of pine (white board they call it) for like 9 bucks or so and they don't charge to cut it to your specifications. Home Depot will charge you an arm and a leg for each and every cut. I usually buy the 10 inch wide pieces and have them cut into 8 inch segments but thats just me. You should REALLY consider do them, its a lot of fun.

what tricks did you use to break?
I've only ever really broken rebreakable boards (at our club myself and the other instructors kept boards just for ourselves so they actually retained the proper densities).
I've broken doing various jump kicks, distance breaks (jumping over 5 or so people) onto these rebreakable boards. I would argue that they're harder to break than regular pieces of wood, as you have to hit them bang in the middle or they wont break.
tbh, i'm more impressed with paddle kicks with tricks rather than breaks, because breaking a board will often cut the momentum of the technique down, meaning you cant throw harder variations on tricks (hypers etc) because you simply cant break a respectable board and still carry the momentum through. Watching AKC doing hyperc9's onto a paddle or jericho catura pwning a paddle in the old loopkicks samplers is for me a better demonstration than board breaking in the same fashion.

used to flash kick side swipe and cheat 7/9 1" (thick) boards (id usually break my toenails)
and i could jumpback and cheat 9 scallop concrete pieces

also i think breaking is the best demonstration of momentum and follow through, in fact i feel it gives some clout to tricking
i wish sesh would do creative breaking at us open haha

Awesome kick, what martial art do you take?
Oh, I do agree with the momentum statement but I would add to that by saying that it helps with accuracy and defining the trick by showing more technical ability. I suppose it would be tough to do combos but there is something to be said about doing one super clean and powerful move.

Okay so here is my "breaking sampler" of sorts. I did these breaks today. Just used 3/4 inch pine from the hardware store. Didn't really like the jump spinning hook kick now that I think about it but no reason to play monday morning quarterback. Enjoy

I broke a board with a standing flash before and my whole foot was bruised for a few days. I have seen a few cheat 7's but again, it's probably cheap wood and is only for effect. I find targets just as challenging but far less painful.

well that is too bad man...unfortunately bad teachers are a dime a dozen. hopefully you will have some better luck from here on out.
Glad to hear you are motivated its lots of fun and challenging to attempt to do those breaks
For some reason I read this as breaks as in "post what you do in your lunch break"
This is much better though :P I'd love to see someone break something with a cheat 720 or a btwist round :P
No, I can't contribute :( wish I could.

lol, well i guess that could have been one way to look at it.
I suppose I need more practice with those types of breaking techniques. Interestingly enough the thing that always seems to concern me the most when doing a break, much less ones like those in my video, is hitting the board holder's hands.
One of the guys in this thread had video of himself doing a btwist on the Bob dummy and it looked really good.
