hey guys, i'm curious about how many pushups (in a row, no breaks between them) other trickers can do. and i'm not talking about any sort of special pushups like on your fists or something, just the regular classic ones.
i usually do 61 every night before going to sleep. my personal record was 84..(doped myself with sugar tho...)
how about you guys? how many do you do (usual/max)?
EDIT: i've been doing them every day for the last 3 years

I don't think anyone here trains push ups haha.
I'd be dissapointed if I couldn't do about 80 though at least.
Are we talking about pushups where you go all the way down until your chest touches the ground?
Cause if so, 80+ is a whole heck of a lot, I can do around 35.
I do them on knuckles though.

Well ive been doing pushups every night for 4 years now, and my best record was 107

Why do you do them every night?
I mean, pushups are semi-ok if you have no access to weights. Other body weight exercises are even better.
Srsly though, pushups every night aren't going to accomplish much tricking wise or strength wise.

that's one hell of a lot man, you got my respect
how do you deal with the breathing tho, usually i'm down at 70 cause i get out of breath...if it wasn't for that i could do 100+ i think
Why do you do them every night?
dunno, works better for me to do em before going to bed. besides i kinda got used to doing them, it's like a reflex

I expecting Andy to be a stick insect haha.
I can't one arm press up for shit haha, not with closed legs anyway, I did 2 last night though with my friend Ben on my back, he weighs about 150lbs ^.^
It makes me wonder about the correlation between weighted press ups / bench presses, pushing him up was significantly harder than benching the 165x5 the last time I did a flat bench press.

The most pushups I've done is about 35. Normally I can do about 25 max. I'm not sure why everyone can do 100 pushups so easily, do people use a really limited ROM or am I just totally shit at life?
Shaedar
May-01-09, 02:45 AM
The thing with push-ups is that you adapt quickly and soon you're pushing beyond strength and hypertrophy rep ranges. Therefore your pushup max isn't a presentation of chest strenght but of endurance.
Two and a half years ago I could do 30 pushups@68kg BW. I couldn't do a single dip, I hardly benched 30kg.
After 8 months I stopped doing pushups and other BW stuff at home, had a half year break, hit the gym for two months, quitted, bought the rings and again started working out at home.
Today I did 16 pushups with strict form at 82kg BW. I can do 20 dips and the last time I benched (a year ago) I was lifting 3x5x60kg. Also my chest looks hawt.
I don't consider myself strong by any means, but I think you can see that push ups don't have as much to do with chest strenght as many think.

still pretty impressive number of reps man, keep it up
...I'm not sure why everyone can do 100 pushups so easily, do people use a really limited ROM or am I just totally shit at life?
i don't think it has anything to do with limited ROM (as for me i go all the way up & down), maybe it has got to do something with your breathing? when you do yours, why do you stop at 25ish? because you're out of breath or beacause of lack of strenght in arms/chest?

exactly!
when i began i started off with 15ish, and within one month i got to 30something. it has nothing to do with strenght. Good point Shaedar

OP, 61? Why 61? Did you not want to stop at 60, but 62 is out of your reach, every single night forever?
Anyway I have no idea, how many I can do really depends on form and tempo. I think I did 20 or 25 one time, I should really go at high speed and use shitty form and see how much I can rep out.

na, it's just that i don't wanna do only sixty, and sometimes i'm too lazy to do more, so 61 gives me the feeling of doing more than my minimum

it wouldn't be that much of a difference. the faster you do em the faster you run out of breath (even tho you're breathing). if you do em to slow your muscle exhaust and you lack the strenght to go any further. try finding a speed that fits you best! :juji:
(i do like one pushup per 1.5 seconds i think)

(i do like one pushup per 1.5 seconds i think)I find the faster you do them, the less you can rely on tendon elasticity to generate power and the muscles work and exhaust you. Slow is mainly only helpful when you are pausing on the top for bones.

When I read Dogen's site, it said he could do 10 handstand pushups. Pushups are great, but handstand ones are cooler so the goal should be to move up to these by successively inclining by raising feet and going deep.
andyzzle
May-04-09, 04:17 PM
well who wouldn't? (except for antoine, he CAN already bench half a ton!XD):trophy:
Ashtar
May-05-09, 12:07 AM
Hm, bench doesn't always help handstand (incline bench would more) but Antoine may be able to do it since he probably has strong shoulders too.
I am going to do you an immense favour Andy. This is also for anyone else who wants to get very good at pushups, as well as other bodyweight exercises.
First off, this is a link to a .torrent so you need a tracker, I use uTorrent. Become familiar, and then when you are ready, open this tracker and download the file:
Pushups+squats+abs video (http://www.anirena.com/viewtracker.php?action=download&id=22321)
This exercise video will demonstrate to you a variety of different pushups with different rep schemes. It also shows the exercises from a variety of angles so you will become familiar with them.
It also teaches a variety of squats (if you push with your arms, you should also do so with your legs) and also a variety of abdominal exercises.
I am confident that when you train to be able to follow along with the entire thing without pausing that you will be incredibly strong. Until that point, simply pause as long as you need to, and try to decrease the pause times over time.
andyzzle
May-05-09, 05:28 AM
thx man, i gotta admit there are a couple of pretty good things shown...

You'd actually be suprised how many people can do 10 handstand push ups that aint that many actually, but yes i agree, handstand push ups are way more useful/beneficial and generally cooler
