To those without a Gym. It's tough being a tricker without a gym to train in. everything just feels super unsafe to try even if you dont have the fear lol. just wanted to give all of us a shout out 'n' stuff. and to hear some stories (and probably the inevitable retribution of those with gyms who will be offended for no reason) BUT W/E

Sorry to say this, but please grow some balls. If there is really no gym around you can still trick well and you can definitely trick safely.

lol i obviously didnt say you cant trick well without a gym i was trying to say the opposite to encourage people (mostly noobs) to keep going and trying because when i first started i thought i would never be able to do shit cause i didnt have a gym around. i just didnt want other people to get discouraged.
your a fuckin jerk.

I disagree with you tivo, there are variables that you dont control at all, even if youve got the balls to try whatever shit you want, you could always slip and fall, ive never stepped on a gym but it would sure increase my confidence.

You can trick fine on just grass, it doesn't even matter.

Grass isn't that bad. Go trick in a weight lifting gym or a hard wood floor. Then when you get on some grass its like a cloud.

grass tricks ftw.
I have a gym but I almost never go because I'm too lazy to set up something other than open gym.
open gym has 600 babies, and I can't be in that kind of environment after baby killing rehab

I learned 99% of my tricks on grass.

It's not that bad.

i also i agree. i never set foot a in a gym until like 2 years into tricking. and that didnt keep me from learning a shit ton of tricks.

But a gym is nice every now and then.

Yeah, I feel the pain. Being without a gym utterly sucks. Tricking on sand makes me cry and shatters my confidence. D: But once I finally got into a gym, I realized how much stronger I became and everything was easier. w00t. So I gotta keep toughing it out especially that I'm without any other trickers whatsoever too (sooo discouraging.) ALL THE VARIABLES ARE AGAINST ME!! :agony:

8 months till I can get into a gym again. yay

Quite true. I train on hard wood and when I go on grass (like once a month if I have time/the weather isn't that bad) it feels like I'm stepping on something I can barely get a grip on (like clouds). Grass is much nicer to crash on though. As for a weight lifting gym, it works fine for me as long as I don't slam into someone (a bit difficult when there are 50 people in a school gym cramped together). In the end, I train on hard wood mostly and have learned all my tricks on there (eh, haven't really learned that many >_>).

for those naturals like kyle, starting tricking without a gym isnt that bad, but damn i hurt my self in the early 2000's trying to btwist 540 and back tuck with no guidence spot or spring floor.

at this juncture in tricking history, enough resources online and within the community to learn the basics and make a good progression, and god forbid LEARN TO KICK

I go to gym roughly every few weeks. Its quite far on train though. I mostly trick on grass, like a man.

i feel ya pete. im not saying i didnt get hurt alot. but i was young and bounced back quickly.

but pete is right. today with some many tutorials and helpful people there is no reason why u cant learn to trick on grass. just learn your pre reqs and dont try stupid things.

You make it seem that tricking without a gym is a dangerous endeavor that implies incredible risk that's why I answered the way i did. Sure there are freak accidents like slipping and falling, but confidence in tricks comes from drilling stuff. Drilling stuff gives you confidence in tricks and even reduces the chance that the shit hits the fan.

And also, what Kyle and Pete said.

i've learned all my tricks on grass and have injured myself a whole lot but nothing ever serious. you guys are makeing me sound like im some kind of idiot who thinks that you can only trick if you have a room with soft floors and a spring board or w/e the hell else they have in them. im just saying that haveing a gym would get ME personally into a more comfortable setting because tricking is 99 percent mind games you play with yourself (because tech. is mind also). all i wanted to do was say that you dont need a gym but it would feel safer if you had one and to not get frustrated just because you dont have one. im not trying to have a dick measureing contest with a bunch of assholes. just give encouragement and hear about some funny stories from people. dang!

your an idiot.

you contradict your self in all your posts.

and technique is not a mind/mind game.

Grass is great for bailing any move that doesn't land on your neck. Learn to roll out of a bail.

i learned double everything on grass, i tricked for years before ever stepping foot in a gym, just find good grass.

I have never tried to trick in a gym, and I'm extremely new to tricking, but i have played in the grass before. Grass can have hidden surprises for everyone. Broken glass, hard rock to the side, elbow, knee, hand, what have you. The most annoying for me is big dog turd.

Other than that I have messed up enough on grass to know it doesn't hurt as bad as I thought it would. I haven't landed too many tricks, but I wouldn't mind having a gym with someone to help me get the basics. Just work with what is given I guess...

LMAO.

pretty much no contest haha

on a side note, i didnt have a gym session until i'd been tricking for 3 years, everything I can do i learned on grass/hardwood floor/concrete.

it'd probably explain why my ankles are disintegrating.

sandpit > foampit
grass stains > plyo carpet burns

only thing is that whenever there is a gym session here, ppl from all around the north gather to have a fun time. grass sessions are kinda lonely but it makes you focus better

I only get to use a gym ahbout 4/5 times a year.
I'm a pretty shit trickster in retrospect but I still do it on grass. Regardless though, I still prefer the comfort of a gym, especially when learning or experimenting with new moves.

Yep

And,
Grass= Organic Technique
Gym= Pylo Technique

Not applying to all tricks, more so punch etc.

I dont get whats scary about tricking on grass or concrete or anything? I know its all i ever done really but never found it a big issue, actually i done more crazy shit when i started than i dream of doing now!

i dont have a gym where i live, tbf im not a good tricker but i still try new tricks on grass . . . grass ftw

Why the fuck would you be scared of basics if you are a noob? The only shit you should be able to do now is basic Kicks and cartwheels its not like you are just going to go out and try a Dub Cork on grass right off.

I havent been to a gym for a year now.

i go to a gym every friday now, but i still love tricking in the grass, makes me feel like my tricks are more me, not extra bounce i get from the gym floor, just me jumping off the grass, plus i like tricking in the grass more cause you get to think, hmmm which park do i think with have the most hot girls at today and then i go to that park and trick : )

Grass = spontanious trick session

It's not bad if you find your own comfort zone. What sucks is when everyone you trick with has a different comfort zone. I like grass, one of my friends likes sand, and another likes woodchips.

i find using a gym makes me lazy. so i don't try harder when trying to learn something new because i know if i bail i wont hurt. but if i trick on grass i jump higher and spin faster and feel much more in control. just because i don't want to land on my neck apsjfnpasnf wtf

It sucks ass, but you just have to learn your tricks the hard way.

No, not by breaking your neck 30 times before doing a gainer. By going through super-small differences to progress. Start with a backwards roll, then start jumping onto your shoulders and roll, then do a bhs, then a roundoff bhs, then a roundoff whipback, then roundoff back, then standing back etc...

I did this for a ton of my tricks.

I've got a gym now, but I didn't have one for years when I first started. Ironically enough, I gained a ton of tricks the first 3 months I tricked. I did axe aerialswitch in late 2002, apparently. I've always sucked at twisting though, and flipping isn't my safe suit either. I just didn't like practicing corks and fulltwists on hard grass, as they always hurt like bitches.

Just find your niche and work it like a madman. Learn stuff in small increments, and always check the ground for rocks and stuff that might damage you. A mattress is great to have as well.

i learned all my swings on grass, first whip back to whip back on grass, kicks well, if ur too much of a pussy to try kicks on grass just quit , iv never been in a real gym, just dojos, and i fucking hate them, grass is my training ground, im so used to it, and........ i did my first axe2aerial outside today on grass,,, ^^ i know its not a big move at all but its takin a hell of long time to get for me, soo yay for grass tricking

Ya i may not be a tricker but all i do is use grass. I learned my first bhs btuck cartwheel lol and even a front flip and 5 (with hands) since i like going forwards. But i have this area in my neirborhood (the ditch) where its nothing but nice soft grass and quiet. Someone times the people that live on the edge usually watch me tumble. But when im tumbling i feel successful every time i land a new pass or when i first learned my whip back whip back which was amazing to me. I have never stepped foot in a gym but have seen one and i have always wanted to be in one. So i guess ill stick with grass for now since im used to it and fcked up my yard and now must us the ditch lol.

i tricked 4 years on grass and when i was in the gym for the first and only time i realised how some people can throw some of the ultra sick stuff, everything worked out A LOT better and i learned some new moves from just being there once...
so for me the difference is fucking huge ^^...

i'd love to have a gym here.. i was just once in a gym in my life..

I started out in a gym, but once I started grass tricking I fell in love.
it feels like a more accurate representation of my skills
plyo makes me feel like superman
I like tricking on both though.
I only trick on grass if I have friends with me, not as fun alone
