Hey TT,

Ive been on a pretty strict diet that includes all the good stuff, (fish, protein, nuts, fruits etc) with doing my A day workouts (mostly hardcore abs and legs) and B day workouts (chest, & some core).

But ive read a few articles mostly all saying alcohol during a fitness routine is bad for you ie.

http://www.disabled-world.com/artman/publish/alcoholfitness.shtml
http://www.carpmanfitness.com/Articles/Alcohol.htm
http://www.socalworkout.com/wpblog/2007/10/16/alcohol-and-fitness-training/

I dont drink beer, only hard stuff, and when I do its most likely with Coke-Zero or maybe some fruity shit when its hot out, I also only do this once or twice a month, and when I drink, I drink.
How bad would these 1 or 2 nights a month throw off my routine? Are there ways to ease the harmful effects of it? and What are some people's experiences with a fitness routine and drinking?

Drinking = bad. I purposely stopped because it hurts your body, and weakens your senses.

I suggest not doing it, but if youre going to, then we cant stop you.

BTW where in NY! im in NY aswell, Long island.

It's not that bad haha. I get drunk probably about once every 4 - 5 months. But I'd say getting drunk once a month is fine.

Your day after will probably be hindered but it's probably not going to make that big of a difference.

It wont do too much unless you're trying to drop fat or are drinking copious amounts every night.

Hm, good finds. Well from what I can conclude Im guessing if I do do the 1-2 nights a month thing it wont hinder me tooo much, and Ill just try to stay extremely focused on my routine.

I figure Ill just have a lengthy workout the day I do drink, and save room in the day for calories that I would consume later in drinks. And no more drunk meals, those days are over!

just dont drink right before training and you'll be ok

I'm not sure having a lengthy workout before getting drunk will be your best option, it could take you backwards a little bit. I'd say a small easy workout the day you get drunk, as the alcohol will dehydrate you among other things and mess up your recovery.

You're making it sound like you have to drink twice a month.

I find this concept in youth of getting drunk as a must pathetic. Whether at parties or just occasional meetings with friends.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against a beer, a glass of wine or some whiskey on the rocks. It's just that everyone is so obsessed with getting smashed as soon as opportunity arises.

Why don't you drink when you feel like it and as much as you want to ?

I don't know anyone who thinks they have to drink...
People drink because it is fun.
Yes, alcohol basically is a shitty drug and has some crappy side effects.
But I have never met anyone who "has" to drink--unless you consider the wine-guzzling-hobo-that-lives-downtown-in-front-of-library a person?

People generally understand alcohol is bad for you [even if they pretend they don't]. Thank you D.A.R.E.
If they still feel like getting smashed every night, then why let it bother you?
Especially at the college / high school age. It is a very common phase to go through. Most out grow it in a few years.
While maybe a handful end up like our hobo friend.

ps: if you are an alcoholic, you know it and you don't need anyone to tell you that you should stop drinking. let people assume responsibility for their own lives, especially if isn't someone close to you [which would obviously be a different situation].

I didnt say I "must" drink.. I said I do occassionally, but not very often, and wonderred the effects of it on fitness.

I like to get smashed. I don't really enjoy the taste of alcohol that much, so why would I drink it if I wasn't going for the effects of it?

Shaedar
May-11-09, 09:11 AM
Well I can't drink it if I don't like the taste. Or better put, I don't want to drink it if I don't like the taste, it's pointless. I want to enjoy my drink. Getting drunk of it is a bonus.

I am currently slightly drunk. It is very rare that I drink, basically I do so whenever I encounter free alcohol. Tonight I found free wine so had a few glasses quickly before it got taken away. It made things much better. I might do it again.

But my deadlift went down by like 300lbs

It's now the "morning after" my very, very tame drinking experience. It's worth nothing one effect it has that will fuck up your health and athleticism - it ruined my sleep. I drank about three or four glasses of mystery white wine left behind by some suits. Despite feeling most comfortable and not drunk, sleeping, when it came to it, was shit. I had the same last time I drank, too.

Stay in school.

When I get drunk, I tend to wake up early as shit, no matter how late I stay up. I can stay up until 4am, and then I'll still wake up at about 7:30am, feeling completely fresh. Unfortionately, while I feel wide awake for hours, I do end up feeling even more tired in the evening.

Alcohol would probably be fine if people only drank what they brewed themself (due to limitations in time) or very expensive wines (red of course).

Ohhh you know what got me thinking of this thread? Me drinking and then actually tricking a bit, I didnt get it recorded but it was mad fun, AND I LANDED, I dont know how I did it. I cant do much but I AM GETTING THERE. I love TT.

haha so true.
The day after will only be shit if you drink low-quality cheap crappy alcohol or if you don't drink very often.
What Jon P talked about (the phase in life where getting completely smashed twice a week is normal) usually doesn't last very long anyway, most people I know (in Germany, it's different in the UK) stop drinking excessively at around 18 or 19.

Here, as far as i can tell, people drink constantly from ages 14-17. Only because it's "naughty" and illegal. By the time 18 comes around you realise that you need money for more important things, and that hangovers aren't that great! I personally drink once, maybe twice, a month. By drink i mean get hammered.

legal = boring etc

If you're looking at it from the fitness perspective, may I suggest this article?

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson194.htm

I found this to be extremely simple and informative upon alcohol's effect on the body, geared towards the perspective of the bodybuilder/lifter.
