View Full Version : Prejudicial Favoritism

Don't post if you post like a child, thank ya!
Anyways, let's try to do this in less than 20 lines.
Frankly, why is it that individuals (pre)judge people's personality based on their tricking ability? Conversely (but not the point of this thread), why do people also tend to degrade someone's tricking ability based on their personality?
The biggest example of this of course are big name trickers. The pioneers of tricking. So good at tricks! Everyone loves them. Everyone has a very positive mental disposition towards them. This isn't bad, in fact I personally encourage everyone to maintain a positive viewpoint of every individual until they have a good reason not to, and to still do so even after that.
But the problem comes frankly with favoritism. I.e., cock sucking. This issue has seemed to rear it's ugly head here and there recently, so my continuously lack of caring about drama made me think hey why not talk about this how bad could it be.
Point: It's not very wise to start being quite biased towards an individual as a person simply based on their tricking individual. You're probably saying, gee that's common sense. If it's common sense, why does this issue pop up so much?
Let's just throw it out there: recently Kyle said something or another (I didn't bother reading too in depth) about how big name trickers basically aren't always the nice, loveable, role model citizens that everyone thinks they are. Now while I don't condone the very untactful way he handled expressing his opinion, the principle here is completely correct.
Why does everyone jump to defend the personas of people they've never met? If you love someones tricks, then that's great. If you think good of them, even better. But honestly don't get into stupid discussion trying to defend people you don't know, who don't know you, and who might not even like you. Just because someone is really good at tricks doesn't mean they can't be a horrible person. This applies in reverse too, if you don't like someone on a personal level don't try to degrade their skills.
I feel retarded having to explain this concept, but seriously. But really if fights are gonna break out about this I might as well tell it like it is: overcome your personal biases. And if you don't know someone, don't act like you do. Really if you've met someone in real life, you know them a bit. If you've seen someone consistently express their opinions on TT, you probably know their temperament even more. But if you've just seen videos of that person spinning and kicking in the air, how do you know if they're the nicest guy ever or a complete fag? Haha.
Screw 20 lines.

A big reason why a lot of people are cocksuckers is because they dream that maybe one day they will meet that person and might get some awesome training with that person if they defend them or some shit like that.
I agree with this. I usually never post in dramathreads. Still I'm on TT everyday (Just like Dan). Even though, I should consider having another account named "John" so I can post my oppinions about the given subject. I hate to post like "Ott". Ott is my product, and he does not take part in drama or discussions hahahaha

You self-centered-man, you! Why wouldn't "THE OTT" attend to the drama on TT? helping instead of ignoring!
AND I AM AWESOMER THAN AWESOME CAN BE, IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING.
Because it's not "helping" to discuss the kicking issue in tricking. It's "helping" to release a sampler with alot of kicking/twisting/flipping ;)

You strike me in the heart. THAT'S just the way it is.
On this matter, I have a confession to make:
Dan Pitlock, I dream about meeting you and training with you it will get me 1000x better at tricking and I also hope you will accept when I propose marriage to you.
So anything you say or do is awesome, even though you act a cocky tool on the forums.
Furthermore, I always hoped to be able to get it on with Jessica Alba.
Maybe bringe her around, Dan, we'll have a threesome.

Ott, Ott, Ott.. I love your hungry ego! discussing a kicking issue is one thing, being a helpful part of the community and show your interest in other trickers and their problems is something else and something bigger.
Terminology isn't really the main issue on the boards, it used to be attitude problems but a lot have changed. Showing up in a discussion and discuss reasonable without throwing useless facepalms etc. helps.
Or actually just kicking/twisting, and a bit "THE OTT".
But I'm actually serious about this. In discussions, everyone should be named "John".

anonymous discussion, hmm.. Sign if you want, it's a good thing, but it will result in more flaming and more shit on the boards if you're anonymous
I know . That's the problem Skillz is pointing out. TT's Hieraki based on names and skills. I say "John" - and let the drama begin!

It works the other way around for me, degrading people's skills if they seem like assholes. When I watch their samplers I think "yeah, okay, nice tricks, but he's still an asshole" and can't really enjoy the sampler, haha

I agree skilz but people will always act this way, even if they realize how flawed they are.
And maybe finally people can stop going "you can't even do a triple btwist, who are you to say that it was vertical like a 1080?????".
About time, hah.

I love Otts point. The lines we draw between our Real Selves and our Online Tricking Personas is a really interesting thing.
I used to be kinda like Ott, viewing my online personality as a seperate entity from my real self. Oftentimes, I consider the objective of my life to blur the lines between the person I Am on a day to day basis, and the person I pretend to be on these forums, or at gatherings.
As though people's opinions can almost dictate how you act in a given situation. "John" thinks that "Ott" shouldn't participate in drama, because he has an image to maintain - even though "John" might actually have a good time getting into some of the more dramatic threads here.
I feel like it goes both ways sometimes. The big name tricksters are as obligated to appeal to an image of themselves as their fans are.
Maybe we should all just be a little more honest with who we are, and who we're trying to be.

I agree. The problem is that the "dramatic" threads 80% of the time is kinda.. Yearh. So I don't want to give all the negative (most of the time) stupid drama, attention with a post.
What do you want to give attention, Antiwar or peace?? To make it more abstract.
But i seriously need to get better at posting in good discussion threads. I will blame myself for that.

Just remember, You ARE Ott!
Act however you want! I try to remind myself on a regular basis to ignore the fact that people might look up to me, and act like a psychopath anyways
See, I like it when it works the other way - when someone is so beloved that they earn brownie points just for showing up with a video, like Swartz!
I AM John, Dave!!
hahaha. I know what you mean ;) . I act very natural, I just don't get involved in very much. I was just trying to prove a point by using myself :)
I completely understand your side, Ott. A LOT of people look up to you in this tricking community and one bad post can really change how people see and think of you. You have to be careful.

How could I have spent my first 5 months of tricking watching, idolizing and training to become like my favorite trickster if they're a total asshole? I can't have and they can't be. That would mean that I'd completely invented this person; they don't actually exist! If they don't exist, how will I train now? How will I get inspiration? How did I go for so long, following what turns out to be an imaginary friend. No, they aren't like you say. They can't be!
If someone punches you in the face, do you forgive them just because they're good at ceramics? Screw that. Use your heads people haha.

I agree with this thread greatly. there are some trickers who are just not nice people. simple put. But on the other hand i have met some of the coolest, greatest most respectable people you will ever meet in your life. So yes there are a few with great skills and not a lot of respect for others still it doesn't outweigh the amazing people you meet. Haha omg I agree with that list so much Federico
As far as I'm concerned, it's more important to be a good human being than a good trickster. I think most people agree with that. It's why massive egotism exhibited by a few tricksters doesn't get handled very well by the community. People tend to either change their behavoir or just leave.
Leaving is retarded, for that very reason. These people try damn hard to be halfway decent most of the time, and shoot down egotism and narcissism when we see it. Using Anis as an example is kind of hard, because he's not very active in the community, so people just make him into whoever they want him to be in their heads without any real evidence to back it up. We all need a hero. Mine's Ott!
The few times I've chilled with Anis, he was really humble, down to earth, and an all around really cool guy :good:

It's really also quite sad when you get a very different impression of someone not because of their personality or tricking ability, but their impression of you.
I have a lot of respect for a lot of trickers, good at what they do or not. I wish I could represent that better.
I've been very fortunate to make it to a good number of gatherings this past year and I have met a LOT of different tricksters from around the world. It's great to know that the majority of these people are just awesome people. I have only met a small handful of tricksters who I thought had a poor personality.

im pretty much always gonna have a positive disposition to trickers because 100% of the trickers ive met have been awesome.
all the UK guys are awesome, all the loopkicks guys were really nice, i remember eating chocolate bullets and talking about tea with Chris D and Chris Balualua and they were really nice guys.
however i love bashing people on TT, it reminds me not to take life so seriously.

i have tricked with almost all the guys on this list and have to agree they are actually some of the nicest people, most sincere i have ever met, not just tricked with!
You can't stop people from idolizing. It's like someone said, it's with everyone who puts out a decent amount of dedication/skill to the sport, and gets recongnition for that. It's the same as with above list. How much of the listed guys are bad at tricking? NONE!
So this list helps maintain the equation between skill and being a sympathetic personality.
My first post was already, in a cynical way, meant to point out dramatic idolizing.
side notes: I don't want to begin to talk about differences between real life/ internet board.
Dan Pitlock is still one of my favorites to watch, btw.

Agreed with everyone on that list that I've met. I could add a ton more, but it'd be just as easy to say:
Every single trickster I've ever met since I started tricking has been totally awesome. Maybe a couple of them were kinda quirky, but even Matt R made me smile, hahah.

Indeed siree! BG this summer?
yeppp. This time, I will sit down and talk to you about guitars! And bring (one of) yours maybe?
People are people.
People that trick are still people.
People that trick well are still just people.
Is "cock sucking" really the problem? For some reason I don't believe that people being too nice is the problem. haha
I think the issue lies more in the fact that people stick with and promote certain cliques.
Tricking cliques--obviously retarted.
But even this isn't really a problem.
It is the "battle mentality" that is the problem.
"Team _______ is so much better the the over rated Team______!"
"Team _______ is a bunch of cock suckers and they like to lick hobo butt!"
The idea that we must promote our own tricks, our own glory and beat out every other tricker. Rather then promoting the actual act of tricking. haha
I think we all just need to gather around a campfire with our guitars and sing 'Kum Bay Yah'.

You must be talking about Kamikaze! 'Cause I am just NO fun. Lemme tell ya.
Seriously though, there are REALLY REALLY good people in the tricking community... and then there are really really BAD people. I use to get caught up in online confrontations with some users... then I realized that... mostly these people are just cocky ass hats when they're on the other side of a keyboard. IRL they're pretty cool. MOSTLY Of the tricksters I'VE met I haven't found ONE that I really don't like. There has been the odd misdeed during a gathering but... we all make mistakes.
As for the obvious dirty knees and brown noses that plague the community... just... ICK. It gets out of hand. And it's BECUASE of these people that the bad attitude, cocky, sons-of-bitches come into exsistance frankly.
I now realize that there hasn't been a post in this thread since mid-last month.... so I'm bumping it up with another pointless opinion and prospective.... sorry if you clicked the link and actually wasted your time reading all this.... Seriously. Stop. Alt-F4 for God's sake. After all, there's no fucking way I'm not going to post this after taking the time to type it.
