View Full Version : Noob Question...

Okay. Sorry if these are really noobish questions, but I thought I'd try to ask for information in the one place I know I can get a solid answer. I guess I'll follow nighthunters "How to ask for advice" just to make it easier for you guys haha.

1.) I'm 13 years old and have been going to the gym inconsistently for the last month, and I'm ready to try to go enough to bulk up and get fit and slimmer. I have no serius injuries or pains that affect me in my training, exceptfor minor knee pain whilst doing squats/hacksquats.

2.) I have a large body build, and before you kill me for being a fat ass after I post my weight, I don't look it at ALL. I currently weigh in at 200 pounds, and yes I am overweight, but I am by no means huge. I have goals to drop to 170 or 160, and I don't expect to get there in only 3 or 4 months. I want to first drop to 160 or 170, and from there I would like to proceed to increase muscle mass, get cut, increase my muscular endurance and strength, and eventually weigh 190-200 after bulking.

3.) I have currently decided to dedicate myself to weight loss and muscle gain for a few huge reasons:
1.) I am overweight, moreso then I should be, and I want to change that.
2.)I one day aspire to become a bodybuilder, and that isn't going to be easy if I'm fat.
3.) I wish to play tournament paintball next year, which will give me time to bulk up and get better, slimmer, and be able to run faster longer.

4.)Self assessment of my ability? I can't run for very long, honestly probably only a sixth of a mile. I can handle some cardio work though, and I am beginning to try to incorporate that into my workout. I have never worked out before, so I am not really that strong, but my main focuses as far as cuts go after losing weight will be mainly arms and traps. I would love to have traps, nice shoulders and biceps, and even toned forearms if I can get that far.

5.) Sorry, no pics. I don't have any specific cutting questions right now.

Well, thats just a little bit of information that might help you to answer my main questions. Since I'm new at working out, how many times a week should I do it? How long, should I split up weight lifting days with cardio days or is it okay to do both in one session? What is a realistic window of time for losing 30-40 pounds? What exercises do your recommend for certain hard to train muscle groups, if there are any? Are there any specific techniques I should use in my training? Are there certain pains I should look for to signal injuries? And would it be dangerous/unrealistic(I expect to be around 15 when I finally reach my goals) for me at 13 to attempt to reach the goals I have for cutting (specifically, 6 pack, thick lats, distincitive curvature between the delts, biceps/triceps and forearms, and that "V" shape along the back, I can't remember what muscle that is...)? I sincerely apologize for the barrage of questions and the lack of knowledge, and I plan on spending the rest of this week racking up information for my diet and workout plan from this forum and from the various books and internet sources I have. Thanks in advance, and once again, sorry for all the questions.

4.)Most of all, I suffer from moderate Gynocomastia. Enlargement of the breast to due to increased estrogen releases...which is another reason I need to lose weight. Its not terrible, but its not very fun either.

...wait did u just say estrogen?

haha. Its a common misconception. Guys don't just release testostorone, girls dont just release estrogen. We both release each substance, but in very different levels. Or so I've read.

Don't question it. Such things are touchy subjects. I've had to deal with such things far too much in my lifetime.

Where the hell is compleks? He could answer this one in a jiffy.

Shh, don't tell anyone.

I've grown up with someone who has a chromosome disorder known as XXY, or Klinefeiter's disorder. It took him 13 years of constant testosterone and thyroid balancing to become the man he is today...

I killed compleks, sorry. It's true that both men and women have testosterone and estrogen in their bodies. Men obviously have more testosterone than women which is the reason why we're able to put on muscle mass far more easily than women. On the flip side, women have more estrogen in their bodies than men. This is the sex hormone that can cause mood swings, breast developement etc.

I suggest, peleke, that you see a doctor about that. They can give you anti estrogen drugs that will prevent it from being formed. It will also get rid of your symptoms. If you're taking steriods, however, I suggest you stop - being that they can cause gyno.

Nope, not on steroids, and my dad is a doctor. I need remind him to do some blood tests and try to get the testosterone prescribed A.S.A.P. Thanks for the input and reminder.

Leg exercises are your friend because they help to increase testosterone!

Drex

Thats true, I forgot about that. Squats alone can help improve testosterone levels by 10%, I believe.

Ah! Didn't know that, thanks, I'll be sure to include mroe in my regular exercise regimen. Not that I do many anyway...guess I'll just have to change that.

'Nother question. yes, this one sounds really, raelly sad. Since I'm new at working out, and I'v heard a lot of terms used before that I don't know what mean. I know basi stuff, such as set, rep, isolate, and super set, but thats just a given. I don't know much else. If someone could list some commonly used terms that would be greatly appreciated. Thnks in advance.

In The Zone - Tired and incoherent during a workout. Commonly described out of the gym as "spaced out."

Extended Warm-Up - 20 minutes at low tension on the stationary bike then 20 minutes of casual stretching then a shower.

"Just One More Rep" - Said to a spotter during a set. Really means: "Lift the weight for me."

Forced Reps - For the reluctant exerciser, every single rep of a workout is a forced rep. This is especially true when they have a mean trainer.

Hack Squat - The position a cat gets into when he’s coughing up a hairball, commonly mistaken as a leg exercise.

"Can I work in with you?" - Translation: "Can I remove all your weights and sweat all over your bench?"

Drop Sets - What sometimes happens after doing a hard set of dumbell bench presses. A triple drop set occurs when you drop two dumbells and yourself to the floor.

Bulking Up - Name for the phase during which an otherwise healthy trainer will try to get bigger and fatter on purpose.

"I’m maxing out" - Translation: "I was going for 6 reps but I put too much weight on the bar and only got 1."

Cool-down - Sit on a bench and drink from a water bottle while talking about how much more you’ll lift next time.

Olympic Bar - Athlete’s nightclub.

E-Z Bar - "How dare you! I’m not that type of bar."

Squat rack - The lonliest piece of equipment in the gym.

"It’s all you!" - Said by spotter during the last few reps of a set. Translatation: "It’s mostly me."

Pro-hormones - Hormones that have lost their amateur status.

Meal Replacement Supplement - Cold pizza and warm beer.

Clean and Press - Surprisingly enough, it’s a shoulder exercise, not laundry instructions. A variation of it is even known as the Hang Clean and Press.

High Intensity Interval Training - Occurs when there are two or more flights of stairs leading up to the gym.

Skullcrushers - An exercise where you make like you’re going to bash your own head in with a barbell, a.k.a. lying tricep extensions.

"Hold the contraction at the top and squeeze for 10 seconds" - Said by a personal trainer when he or she wants to punish the client for missing a session.

Owned.

You forgot a few, compleks.

Ass to grass - a squat in which the user does a full range of motion, possibly resulting in the knee cap being blown off and landing in the front desk girl's mocha latte.

Preacher bench - A seat in which a "pro" lectures you about technique and proper form.

Pro - Someone who thinks they know it all, yet manages to lack the skill of shoe lace tying.

*5 minutes later*
*returns after purging 2 1/2 cups of raw fecal matter into the abyss that is his toilet*

"RAWR!" - The sound someone makes to look hard core when trying to lift heavy weight. Is really caused by intense gas, or severely clogged bowel movements.

Newb - A common insult given by a "pro" to someone who has a BA/MA/PHD in exercise physiology because they corrected a critical flaw the "pro" was making in technique.

Well, I still have a long, long way to go. I am only thirteen. Thanks for the link though, as I said before, being a personal trainer is one of my main goals in life, so I'll definitely devote some time to that.

EDIT: That is a great link, thanks a LOT. Now I can finally get started on my weight loss program with some confidence. Once again, thanks.
