View Full Version : Converting to the cheat setup

I learnt the tornado kick with the slow step setup in Juji's tutorials, and now I cannot get close to a 540 kick with it. I was given advice to change to a cheat setup, so I have tried, but I find it very difficult.

With the cheat setup I can do a gay 540 with a super bent leg and it just looks total crap. My friend said to form a 'T' shape with my feet just before I jump but when I do I just feel tangled up and I can't jump and it all goes to shit.

And he said to not twist the non-kicking foot until you have made a 'T' with your feet, but when I try that I feel locked in and unable to jump. I don't know if that made much sense, but basically he said not to pivot with the non-kicking foot until a 'T' has been made with the feet.

Has anyone had such experiences? Any guides on the cheat setup? I've watched a billion 540 tutorials with it and I try to emulate them but I just suck, and I hope it comes with drilling.

Thanks a lot :)

Have you got a video?

Sorry, forgot to mention that. No video yet.. Next session will probably be Thursday unfortunately. Must recover! I'll grab a video of it on friday morning when my net is not capped and when it's off-peak.

I had the same problem as you. I managed to learn how to 540 with Juji's slow step but found it hard as shit to combo through.

Watch your favorite trickers cheat set up over and over. Visualise it and execute it just how he does. Break it down into steps and drill it. Even if your doing shitty tornado's when you first get it, it'll become natural after a while.

IMO if you are concentrating on making your feet a T shape then that's messing you up. Something like that is so meaningless if you are trying to learn a setup and it's distracting you from just doing the move.

Just turn, lift your jumping leg a bit, plant it while still turning, then jump while still turning. Your non-kicking leg will act as a axis of rotation, so the higher you set it before the jump, the higher your kick will be.

I'm assuming the jumping leg is the kicking leg? I'll drill it to buggery and back and keep watching samplers and tutorials, and post a video soon enough. I might post a video of my slow step tornado as well, and ask for tips on doing a slow step 540.

The cheat setup is part of the torando kick and 540, if you are doing either you are doing a cheat setup so enough of this slow setup stuff.

Without a vid i can't give much advice, although skilzat gives a very good explanation of the cheat setup here (http://www.justtheskills.com/index.php?act=show_guide&v_id=10). (sorry but its much better than juji's)

I just read Juji's referred to as the slow step. What I mean by 'cheat' setup is the setup used by most trickers when you see them perform a 540 kick.

edit: Just trying to clarify what I mean.

My tornados and 540s were shit as shit for years partially because juji's tutorials overcomplicated the move for me- compare my early tornado kicks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq2g-iYBxao&feature=channel) to their contemporary counterparts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwiTHx2Bs-Y&feature=channel) and you'll see what a difference changing my setup made to my cheat kicks.

The turning point was when instead of trying to do "build up momentum" using this big, slow setup, I simply put my foot where I knew it was supposed to go and threw myself UP!

Alright, I can do the side to side method! I shall post a video once I grab some footage, tomorrow if I remember. But basically I believe I'm having trouble having my hips ready to do a round kick to successfully hyper the kick.

Hard to explain.. Basically I can't get my kick around/over my non kicking leg enough.

I think a video is in order.

Just dig and jump, you can crank a powerful 540 out of any setup as long as you A) pivot the right amount and B) actually dig down on your jumping leg before you jump. Tada! Accomplish these two dynamics and you're good to go.
