I just landed my first front flips yesterday, but they really suck. I just keep flipping kind of sideways over my shoulder and land crouched down, is this bad, and if so, how do I fix it?

It seems like you're a little scared to plunge right into the flip. I have a similar problem with frontflipping in that I jump too far forward and not stall. If you do the move enough (but still trying to get it straight) you might just accidently get it. Not really anything else you can do, except maybe practicing in a very small allyway with spikes on the walls so if you were to flip sideways at all you'd get a spike where you don't want it...

yeah, i'll post a vid as soon as i can get a camera, and i do them from sort of a one step forward and then bounce first.

well flipping a bit sideways could be due to a number of things. i'm assuming you're running into the trick... make sure on your takeoff, you swing your arms in a circular motion (it's verrrry hard to explain) at the same time as you punch off with your feet. this will give you more height and you will not land as crouched. make sure you are taking off of both feet so that your weight is evenly spread on the balls of your feet. after your arms make a full circle, they should be above your head. shoot them down toward your knees at the same time and maintain the tucked position until your body would be at a 45 degree angle if you were totally straightened out. land and there you have it....lol it's a bit confusing but that's how i'd explain a proper tuck. but this is the gymnastic "proper" way...just fling your carcass and you should eventually get it :P

And make sure you JUMP UP! UP!! I can't emphasise this enough, you have to jump UP dammit! And tuck hard, don't laze through it, do everything with power and commitment.

Yes Rob your right! First you have to jump UP and and the peak of your jump tuck REALLY tight. KNEES TO CHEST!

no srry its really knees to chest, I just saw Dogen's sideflip tutorial (its also about flipping in general) and he says :"Knees to chest! NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!"

And I think Dogen knows what he's talking about...
