View Full Version : Alternatives to running?
Hello.
I abused my legs last spring, leaving me with messed up shins and heels.
They hurt. Like hell.
Sapped of my ability of performing the most simple tasks left me with absolutely no determination of keeping me in shape.
About 1.5 month ago my doctor finally said that I could go bash my feet again, although my heels will continue to hurt after excess usage.
I'm struggling to return to my capoeira training and the tricking, but I really *really* need some cardio workout. Hell, my stretching usually end up with me being winded.
Running is no option, as my heels will plot my assassination. In fact, anything that involves me being outside is a no-no, since it's -30 Celsius outside and the snow usually stops falling in early June.
Swimming kills me. My technique is pretty bad, and I will not last long. That will also mean that I will have to walk a couple of kilometres in the cold. With wet hair on the way back.
I could really use some form of exercise that doesn't involve me freezing to death. Any suggestions?
Elliptical trainer, rowing machine, exercise bike, etc.
I live in a small town, so there's only one place to find those things. The crappy, expensive gym that just happens to be at the same place where I can find the pool :eh:

If you have a bicycle, you can make your own exercise machine by elevating the back wheel on a stand and using the higher gears to add resistance. You can buy such a stand in stores or, perhaps, make it yourself using wood blocks, etc.

Buy a car, and go swimming.
Bring a hairdryer to swimming
Dry your hair better after swimming.

Um, it sounds like you really don't want to do anything.
How about skipping?
Skiing might work, as would the bike thingy.
I suck at swimming
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll go see what I can find in my garage.
By the way - skipping? Eh?
Edit: compleks, you're absolutely correct. I'm trying to eliminate all excuses I can make for not getting started properly.

So keep doing it, and get better at it.
anfeyd, old buddy, hows life?
You could try running stairs at home, if you have a stair case. Although it gets boring very quickly.

your problem is that you saw a doctor and not a physiotherapyst. doctors extremely frequently do not treat sports injurys correctly (i have also learned this through experience)

You dont seem motivated do anything.
if its cold out then just put more clothes on, and whats wrong with joggin in the snow i would think it would take more stress of your heels .
Swimming is perfect, if you cant swim, then even better this is your chance to improve, and walkin a couple of k everyday, again great its more exercise stop been a puff get used to the cold just put an extra layer on...and wear a hat if your hair is wet.
And you can do lots of cardio in doors. just use your imagination, move about, get your heart rate going.martial arts is good, boxing, shadow box whatever.

Do sprints, stay on the balls of your feet the whole time. Get some gel inserts for your shoes.
Complete rest from running and exercise involving impact (such as skipping) would probably make more sense.

You're right, but I couldn't think of much else you can do without leaving the house.

You live in the country with the best XC skiing terrain in the world, or next to it anyway. Why can't you just do that?
