This was inspired by karatekyle.

I think it would be awesome if we could have people post a collage of their trick attempts and when they finally land it. It would give us some ideas on how to drill the move and give people some inspiration and encouragement. Plus it'll be good to know that everyone here is still human and were at some stage not able to pull off some of the awesome shit that they can today.

Here is the road to my backflip:
http://s23.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3NMJIH6ZXJY6H3J97WO4VH5746
http://media.putfile.com/RoadToBackflip

This is the first movie clip I've made, and it is pretty repetitive, but thats the way I wanted it. It has every bit of footage I put into my backflip. A total of exactly 101 attempts before I landed my first one.

After the first day I had 63 attempts under my belt and woke up the next day with sore abs and ass. Began attempts again 4 days later and landed it the next day. The very second one I landed on the ground threw my lower back out because of my already weakened abdominals - should've waited til I fully recovered!

Still out of action at the moment, I'm really tempted to go for some aerials (yes, they still own me) but you just can't take chances when it comes to your back.

C'mon, lets see your succesful tricking stories!
Oh, and any tips on improvement would be appreciated.

Haha, omg, okay...

Here's me learning the backflip. All in one morning, going from not even being able to go over backwards to just barely landing one shitty technique backflip. Backyard tricking at its... er... worst? Best?

Rawr. Right-click and save-as. (ftp://tricks:tricks@67.18.198.28/rook's n00b vids/firstbackflip.mpg)

Super old... 18/8/04. Super embarrassing. And super poorly edited... but I think it shows the whole "overcoming the mind barrier" thing quite well.

You'll be screaming LOOK UP NOT BACK FOR FUCK'S SAKE once I start going backwards... but for me all this was about breaking the fear... technique would come later ;P

The 540....man one hell of a time. I did them everyday over and over untill I got cracks in my shins and sprained ankles. I never gave up on it, even though I sucked ass when I first started tricking. It was great 9 months later when I finally got them consistent.

I relaly liked karate kyles, but yours was just too long. Still I liked it. Shorten it up a bit into like sections where you tried new technques and such.

...nah. No point. It's a shit old vid anyway, and I can't be assed to edit an already poor mpeg when it's really not worth it.

Yeah, my sister wasn't very impressed when she came home and I was jumping around on her bunk mattresses... I'm gonna look into buying some king or queen sized ones off our local auction website (should only cost a few dollars) but I have nowhere to strore them.

Hey you guys have inspired me to learn backflips, gonna have a shot at it tomorrow with spotters. Wish me luck. I'll film it.

Thats what this is about! Good luck man.

Yeah, it may not look like it, but thats exactly what I have been trying to do.... Thanks for the tip all the same, can't wait to start improving my technique some more.

I relaly liked karate kyles, but yours was just too long. Still I liked it. Shorten it up a bit into like sections where you tried new technques and such.

Thanks. Purposely done, I wanted to show everyone EXACTLY what I did to get to the backflip. I did think about splitting it up a bit and putting in parts where I tried a new technique or takeoff. Might do it yet, but for now, this is it.

ur awesome man, i was wondering did u use a spring matress or an air mastress or it doesn't matter

The bottom one was spring to absorb my momentum and the top one was foam to absorb impact. After a while I realised how much a difference having a mat there was. Note: I could have landed it a lot earlier, but I was trying to flip onto a higher surface.

I'd really like to see some B-twist attempts, its what I'm going to start working on after I'm healed. I tried a few on the mats but I kept turning it into a kindof forward flip or I open up and land on my back. Since then I've read a few more tutorials and written down all the tips I could on the move - really want to go out and just do one right now.

Actually, thats a good technique I found when learning the backflip. Write down all the steps it takes to do a backflip. Also, find all the hints and tips you can and ensure that they are encorporated into your description. Then when you video your attempts, watch and make sure that you are following all the steps and using the tips. Go frame by frame and make sure that at each stage you're doing what you're supposed to be.

i got double legs over the weekend, and heres the progression i made into a short vid - 10 mb , http://download.yousendit.com/679D54A261026F82

still need tips !!

iceaura

Wicked man, congratulations. I haven't got the double leg yet but I may still be able to help. Have you seen Dogens blocking tutorial? If you look at your legs just before takeoff they are pretty much straight, if you put them a little in front of your momentum it should help you gain some more height (although, you are getting pretty good height). Also, your arms: have them coiled back before takeoff (ie right arm behind, left arm in front) then rip them around as you take off. When you take off, try jumping up more, it seems that you're leaning forward and killing you're height and rotation. Thats about all I can see without having tried the move, I just compared your technique to others' and those are the differences I noticed. Good Luck.

my road to a <gainer> no video :(
try a gainer randomly for the first time with a spotter land on feet 4 times
come back the next day land on feet once... try again with a better technique land on my eye giving myself a black eye and broken neck... road now has dead end :(
