i have tried over and over and can't seem to get the backflip, so this is a thread for people to explain how they first were able to get the backflip.
eg. what did you do/realize to make yourself able to do this move?

The second time i tucked, i landed it. For some reason i was trying them untucked, so the first time i tucked, i overrotated onto my ass and back. I tucked in front if that matters.

Well for me it was the realisation that I was jumping back not up, jumping up and delaying a bit got me the move, the feel is deceiving, I thought I was jumping up when I infact wasn't, you should not travel any more than...a foot or so back, maximum, any distance that you travel backwards could have been used to go strait up, so if your going back to much you can gain far more height

Hmmm im pretty sure thats my problem. That and that I dont use my arms enough. Everybody tells me that but it seems like I am doing it right but I guess not. So if you could give some tips on how to jump more up than back that would be awesome. Ill try to get my self recorded so I can see what I am doing wrong and everybody can make fun of my form.

I had a couple problems...for the longest time I too was jumping back and not up.
Another thing, the first time I landed a backflip, was when I changed the way I tucked. As mentioned in Juji's exampler, you can either tuck by grabbing your legs in front, or from behind. I always tucked in front, until the one time I tried it behind, I landed it. I never realized that such a little tweak in my technique could make all the difference.
i needed my coach to help me a few times first, and doing it on a springboard with a mat behind me really helps too, it gives you the aerial awareness. Also run through the move in your head many times, it's a way to practice tricking without actually doing it. Imagine yourself first person view doing it, it would help loads

i first did it on the soft, cushioned area that polevaulters land on, dunno, just chucked it there, once I was comfortable there I moved onto hard ground and did it there.
I had to relearn it afterwards on grass, but its standing strong now.
edit: i totally overused 'there' in this post
well for me, it was all about the fear, cuz i knew i had the rotation and height it was that i was still scared for some reason, then after i decided not to care about my life, lol, and i landed it on my second try. that day was soo great.

if u read wat he typed his not looking for a tutorial on how to do it... that being said...
the first time i did it i was at the gym for the first time.. everyone there was doing backs flashes gainers all this crap and i was just like :O but i was to scared... neways i went over to the foam pit and just sat there for a bit then my mate started bagging me and i got angry and randomly did it into the foam pit.. that got rid of alot of the fear for me... i then got a mate that i trusted to spot me and i did it :)... but see im a small guy... 155-160 so im not scared at all with someone spotting me cause they can save me from pretty much any bail or anything

The best way to jump up and not back is to think about watching the wall/tree in front of you go around and You flip.

Eh, I had the same issue, except more minor. For a while there, my tuck was so half-assed that I barely made it around while landing on my toes. You just have to do it, that's about it. Just dedicate some time to throwing some back's and focus on the tuck. The move only gets easier with it.

Whatever you do dont practice your backflips into a pool, because you will train yourself to be jumping backwards to miss the pool coping rather than training to jump up to get the full rotation.

That's like trying to learn a front flip by flopping onto your bed. Bad habits are hard to break.....If you need that mattress, flip on it, not onto it. You should be able to cheat a few inches in height

hopping on....
in all the videos I watched, it doesn't look like there's that much vertical height involved. Am I decieved? It looks like you need more hangtime than vertical distance to pull this off.

backflip in 4 easy steps:
- look forward, bend knees slightly, arms down.
- Swing arms up hard straight up, spring up off knees, looking fowards.
- looking forwards, bring knees up to chin, tucking however you want.
- open out once you've rotated and land.
done.
Learn it on grass. No excuses.

Few people have a great backflip, most people just got strong enough to half ass it and still land. And if you do that little skip in place thing before you flip, you should definately stop. That's probably because you learned it on a trampoline and you needed the extra bounce to flip.
