Hey dudes. Somehow today I found the courage to try some backflips. I tried 3 times, below is a video of my third and final attempt. The second and third attempt both ended in pretty bad crashes on my head, sitting here now 6-7 hours later, my head is aching somewhat. Id really rather avoid landing on my precious brain in future, its shit. Afterwards, with a damaged head, neck, and back, I did the sensible thing and went to the gym for heavy singles and doubles of deadlifts.
Put these to 320 view size for faster loading, and better resolution. Im not leet with video shit so I dont know how to make unshit vids.
The first attempt I clearly just didnt do anything right
http://media.putfile.com/backflip-attempt-1
The second attempt, I didnt grab my legs with my arms
http://media.putfile.com/backflip-attempt-2
http://media.putfile.com/backflip-attempt-50 <--- third attempt
Ive also zipped all the frames from the third attempt as jpegs which you can unzip and flick through like a slide show with that windows image viewer shit.

The third time, I did tuck (listen to the swish-FAPP of the jump-then-tuck, it owns), but then I came untucked while I was in mid air, and crashed. If you watch the slow-motion parts of the third attempt youll also see that just as I fully tuck in, I stop rotating for a moment, then I start to rotate... I think it was probably my spotter that actually rotated me. See what you think.
So things I know I need to do differently - dont extend my legs back out of the tuck. I could also probably tuck harder. And I need to wear shorts instead of heavy jeans.
Can anyone offer some advice?
I repeat that I REALLY dont want to land on my head any more :dead:
Thanks dudes

with that tuck and that height, i definately think you could land by yourself. If you dont wanna land on your head again, dont bail.
Also, tell your spotter to stay on your hamstrings. If he did, you mightve rotated onto your stomach or knees even though you bailed. But yeah, your tuck is really good, just work on not bailing first.

if you just comitted to the move you would have landed. i look at it this way. If u bail the backflip because ur afraid of getting hurt. Youll probably just get hurt even more if u were just to try your best and hold that tuck tight and for long. and just Know your going to land and you will. Im not an expert at it but as long as you commit to the backflip and make sure you wont bail you will progress alot faster.

tip: just don't freak out, keep the thing tucked
tip to spotter: haha, he's just slamming you to the ground, and not really lifting. that would help, but you're messing up so bad that even proper spotting wouldn't save you.

You have to really commit and bring your knees to your chest hard. You should just be watching for the ground the whole time, and don't panic. As long as you commit, you WILL make it at least to your knees at worst. Just keep at it, and try not to land on your head again.
Oh, and in your last attempt, when you tucked, you brought your chest foreward to your knees which killed your rotation. You have to rip the knees up into you as you continue to look for the ground.

Don't bring your head and torso to your legs when you tuck. Bring your legs to your torso. Alos you are only jumping up and falling back. You actually have to push back as hard as you can to get the rotation.

push back.. by tucking hard?
You (and the other dude) are right about my bringing my head and shuolders forwards into the tuck as well as my knees backwards. Ill try to keep my upper back and head still.
My spotter has no idea about backflips really, we read the tutorial first and I told him what I know but he's no expert - but he did a good job tbh. Even just having someone there gives some confidence anyway. As I watch the vid though, I think I completely stalled just after I tucked, and it was only his rotation of me that made me go round.
My head still aches today and my back and one foot are fucked, so it will be a few days before I try again
Also - do you think im jumping high enough? My vertical is awful, so im not going to have loads of time to float over slowly - but is it high enough?
Am I starting to tuck at the right time?
How do you suggest going about keeping myself from tucking my head forward - juji says not to look back for the ground.. I dunno ill have to just try it again.
Thanks for the advice

Get your spotter to toss you over a few times so you can complete an assisted backflip, rather than having him just try and prevent you crom crashing on your head. I think that's what you really need above all, before you can jump back in.

we dont know how to do that though. I would need someone that understands the move better than me or my spotter.
Advice says for the spotter to have one hand on my hamstrings, but that would get in the way of my arms swinging backwards as I crouch before the jump..
ill watch juji's finally backwards again, does that have taegashi spotting him?

No sir, if a spotter does his job, the flipper won't headplant. Unless he freaks out. Like you did. But he didn't do a good job anyway.

I dont remember freaking out, thats the thing. Attempt #1 is freaking out..
#3 I tucked and committed but maybe because tucking didnt actually rotate me, I tried to avoid death by fast ground and extended my legs. But seeing as I was in too horizonatal a position for that to do any good, I just got owned.
Im actually concerned that I will break my neck or something. Backflips am the danger

distinct from the kind of freaking seen in earlier attempts though; I didnt conciously panic

it's still freaking out. just concentrate on keeping it tucked, no matter how shit you are, it will end up better than with opening the tuck.

I know thats what I need to do, yes
It all happens so fast, theres no way to conciously control it during the jump. I just have to plan what I want to happen and hope that my subconcious does it.
Tips for my spotter would be leet too actually, not just for me

that's so wrong mr. you can just concentrate on "i'll keep it tucked forever" and keep it tucked.
tips for spotter: don't slam him on ground, but try to lift him from his back, and spin the legs over fast

I just found an empty gym/hall with a crash mat leaning against the wall. So I put it down and tried again. I did one roughly like #3 yesterday (it still hurt, despite the mat), then I totally lost my nerve and couldnt even come close to committing. I did like two where I did jump, then I tried a few times and froze before I even came off the ground.
I was standing ON the mat, with another smaller, stiffer mat under my feet to reduce loss of jumping height from the soft crash mat. Fuck you if you say to go and do it on grass - Ill break my fucking neck if I land like that again.
fuck, ill try to get a spotter to come with me to the crash mat some time, that might help.

why not just get 2 spotters? that will boost ur confidence, make u spin faster, and hopefully stop you from landing bad.

tru tru. what he said, lol.
commit to your flip. that first and second attempt showed no commitment whatsoever.
the third one.....
you would make a perfect stuntman =), lol, jk, u didnt tuck well.
if you flip, u might as well put all the force u got and finish it off, that's what ive learned.
when u jump and flip, try not to get too dependant on the spotter to flip u over.
what i do (and yes, im learning the backflip as well)
i jump, but when i reach the point in which im nearly horiz (or ur peak jump height) i immediately bring in my knees with alot of force, which the helps rotates my whole body over.
i can flip over, but i land on my knees, so im almost there.
if u do decide to try again (which you should or else u would feel guilty for not getting the move after all the hard work and bailing that has happened to you) the most important thing to do is to tuck, not just bring your knees to your chest, friggin try and hit urself with ur knees, but in the flipping direction, rather than straight up.
o, and plz observe juji's tutorial....
it DOES help staring at it for 2 hrs straight =D

It's cinda weird that you freak out, cuz i think it's awsome to have the guts to keep on trying after all those bails! I recommend you to imagine yourself doing the backflip, and landing it, that way you'll get more faith in yourself.
Keep it up man, i'm expecting to see you land this trick, and when you do, post a vid
