Who else agrees that having a bent leg during a crescent defeats the purpose of the motion?

it's useful for the first half of the 540 kick but then i just pull my straight leg round as fast as i can using my groin.

I learnt a chambered version of the outer crescent as well as the normal one because it reaches a target (primarily face) more quickly. It's also able to be primed after an inside crescent that's just batted a kick away without reaching the ground (and if done well, you can properly use your hips for power in both kicks within a shorter amount of time compared to kicking from the ground). And obviously there's a version where the leg is chambered the whole time, but that's just a warmup for your hips rather than an attack.
Either way it doesn't work unless you can do the straight leg outer crescent properly, because having that foundational hip motion is where all the power and technique comes from, so we just taught crescents with straight legs until the instructors deemed your kick "good" enough. I agree with the essence of what you're saying, I think. |

A correct bent leg crescent comes up with the leg chambered and snaps out as the target is reached, adding some of the extension force to the kick. Done correctly it is both faster and more powerful than a straight legged crescent. |

You are supposed to drive your shin into your opponent and break whatever part of him you are hitting. Your leg swings like an axe and cuts down the tree. that's Muay thai as I was taught.
the whole 360 thing is done when training because the kick generates that much momentum that if you don't follow it through with rotation you'll be thrown hard off balance/guard. don't focus so much on what you should be doing during the rotation (of a grounded roundhouse) with your hips, focus on all that just before the kick. From your regular 45 degree stance you pivot your front foot slightly out so its pointing straight forward or even slightly past and execute the kick, this opens your hips up all you need for this kick. Remember the idea is to break bones so you put all your force into any Muay thai kick. thus the 360 rotation will come naturally if you don't hit a target during the kick. Does that help at all? I was trained for 3 years in Muay thai from the age of 16-19 and have practiced at home ever since. in case u were wondering. (also spent 2 years kickboxing, and a few months here and there of various other martial arts, but that's slightly irellevant i guess...lol) :) |
