ok, what im doing at the moment, is just trying side to side splits. I know i wont be able to do them, but i figure if its hurting and i keep it there for 20-30 secs then it must be doing some good haha.

if the joint is hurting, stop at once. I've trashed my groin/hips from trying to stretch when actually just wrecking the joint. Be careful, and make sure you feel the stretch in the muscle.

With hip/groin stretching its very hard to tell, imo. It's not like glute or hamstring stretches where theres a nice glowing stretch feeling. It is felt right in the joint, which then hurts afterwards..

I really like the frog stretch for hips. That one's great and it's a good precursor to the side split.

No stretch should "hurt" I think, though a stretch feeling could be considered similar to pain. Especially with relaxed stretching it should be quite mild (even enjoyable). Basically it shouldn't hurt while you stretch, and better not to stretch on muscles sore from stretching. It's best if you don't stretch so much that you feel pain or similar in your muscles the next day.

Papa Lazarou I can say what you said in one line and not in five like you did. Look...

It's NOT pain it's discomfort!
