Hahaha...in some ways, I see your point; however, it's actually quite the opposite. The ability to use acronyms in everyday speech/communication actually shows a great level of intelligence.
Many facets of government such as military, aerospace, etc. are spearheaded by geniouses of sorts...and guess what? They all use acronyms...in fact, most professional groups use acronyms regularly. |

But using acronyms in everyday speech doesn't necessarily show a great level of intelligence. In this case. For these people the acronyms are actually a replacement for the word, which they mindlessly imitate. Good point on the use of acronyms in other aspects of life, but they weren't really relevant to this situation. |

They do not demonstrate intelligence or a lack, they are simply culture. What demonstrates intelligence is how you use it appropriately. If you use dumb slang when no one knows what it means at some science conference: dumb (or funny). When you do it when it is understood and funny, cool. Especially if it is 'lol' and abbreviates the laughter.
It should also not be a substitute for a lack of spelling/grammar, so only people who can speak well should use it. But they don't. That's what sucks. |
