Ok i pose the question..is a 540 hook..really a 540 hook?
I ask this, cause i was analyzing on how to do a jacknife. slowing down videos...trying to figure out what i can do to help. And i was realizing that...its not really a 540. I'm using rudy as an example since people say he has a good one. How is this a 540...normally on a 540 you kick over the knee. But in a jacknife the kicking leg comes up about i'd say half way..maybe even less then you turn for the hook. Is it still a 540? or is more of a cheat-540? Good jackknife has a 540, standard jackknife doesn't reeeeally have much of a first kick.

I noticed most people kick low for the 540, then high for the Hook. I have no plan on doing this move, but I love the way it looks, so I've watched all the vids I can in slow mo and regualr speed, and thats one of the things I've noticed. And yes, Rudy doesn't kick the full 540 I don't think. He even says if you kick lower for the 540, than the hook will come out clean. Chris Devera has a good one, I saw a gif of his once, but I didn't analyze it. Maybe he does the same thing, I'll look for it and post back.

It's a strange move to perform, as I don't even remotely think 540, but I think more on the lines of Cheat720twist and a strange raiz.
I think about laying back after bringing that leg up, and then forcing my back leg and my hips over, and then the final hooks comes out. Barf. I only had this move for a week or so, now I can't fully mentally throw the motion when I do it. I need to conditon my mind for this move again. The movement is so smooth. |

ok i just checked out mannys he does a real 540, and damn...but when he hooked his foot was technically on the ground. his was more of the jacknife i expect to see. like when he started the hook he was mid air but when he was half way complete he was on the ground.
i remember devera says he does a layed back version cause he feels its easier to hook it....i think thats wut he said. |

Yes well look at Chris D's jacknife then haha, especially the one Gdong posted.
And yea, most people just dont really see that Rudy doesnt do much of a first kick, in any footage we see anyway. |

Sometimes the line is blurry between a pumpy 540 crecent and a jacknife. There was a clip in chris mark's sampler that made me think of that; it looked like he was going for a jacknife but if you looked closely there really wasn't a first kick. A lot of people kind of extend the first leg then drop it to throw the hook. Manny Brown and Ben Brown have some pretty solid kicks though.
